Yo, this past week was insane in all the right ways.
I had one of the most beautiful intentional listening sessions I've ever experienced, and this week's album, 9 months & 50 hours by Fred again.. and LATIN MAFIA, is the star of the show. It expanded my mind to what I could be listening to, and showed me how in my bubble I get sometimes.
I feel like I'm becoming more of a global citizen, and this is a beautiful start to that journey.
It's Latin Heritage Month, so I wanted to share some artists from my collection who aren't Bad Bunny, Karol G, or Becky G (all of whom I love). This one's all over the place as far as sounds and genres go.
Full transparency: I don't speak a lick of Spanish, so I have no idea what they're saying. I'm going off vibes and feelings here. Please feel free to educate me, or share some of your favorite Latin music of any genre.
My one ask: listen to this week's album. It's the most beautiful electronic album I think I've ever heard.
Play it in order. I made it that way :)
Five to Sit With
Track 05: "Siquiti Bum" - Midnight Generation
Track 01: "Guajiron 808" - Kansado
Track 02: "Amor Amor" - Bomba Estéreo
Track 03: "Mangata" - Judeline
Track 04: "Mi Fiesta" - Bandalos Chinos
This is the most beautiful electronic album I've ever listened to.
My friend Jai put me on to LATIN MAFIA, and I was moved by these three brothers and their immense talent. She showed me their COLORS performance on YouTube and I was hooked on those hauntingly beautiful vocals.
I'll let you in on a secret: I'm a sucker for a good vocal and harmony.
Meanwhile, Fred again.. was working behind the scenes with these brothers.
And dear god, they were cooking.
When Fred brought his USB002 tour to Mexico City, he filmed a session with LATIN MAFIA before the show called under the fabric.
After a couple of years of building this thing together on and off, they locked themselves in a studio and livestreamed until the mixtape was done.
Then, hours later, they played it live in an arena in front of 20,000+ people.
GOATED.
Jai gave me a taste of this project and I started tearing up immediately.
That's when I knew I needed to create an intentional listening experience with this album.
So I did.
I microdosed some shrooms, blindfolded myself, put on my noise-canceling headphones, lit some incense, and let this album take me on a journey.
It was the first time I'd ever done anything like this, and I've been changed for good, y'all.
When I tell you I cried through the whole album.
I've never listened to an album and felt such immense gratitude just to be alive to hear art like this. I used to think I'd have to wait until I died to search the universe for music like this. A
nd now I'm like, bruhhh, I'm so happy to live on this earth with such gifted humans making music that makes life worth living, baby.
Then I thought about how I probably won't ever experience this project live, and I cried again.
But it's ok, because they recorded the live show and released it. It's streaming on YouTube as 9 months & 50 hours
My hope is that in this lifetime I get to see them together, and I'd travel to the ends of the earth to be there.
I don't have a top 10 albums list, but if I did, this would be on it.
This album is the epitome of why I love music.
I need your thoughts on this, PUHHHLEEEASSEEE!
A Love Letter to 9 months & 50 hours
If this moved you...
This is the kind of thing that lands in your inbox every Thursday — five songs to sit with, one album worthy of a love letter, sent by a person, not an algorithm.
Join TLR Sessions to get the next one before anyone else.
